A bathroom’s tap is an essential component, both functional and aesthetic. It is important to choose the right tap for your bathroom. There are thousands of tap designs to choose from, leading to incorrect purchases.
We have compiled a checklist of five points
to help you choose the right taps. Our experts will help you
avoid common issues and ensure your taps last for many years.
Be aware
of your water pressure
To get a good flow of water, you must choose taps that meet the requirements of your home’s water pressure. Your pressure will be low if your system is gravity-fed.
However, you can expect medium to high pressure
if your system is a combination boiler system. Single-lever mixers, wall-mounted taps and floor-standing
taps require higher water pressure in order to work properly. However, taps
with two handles or pillar taps will still function well with low pressure.
A low-pressure tap can work with a
high-pressure system. However, a high-pressure tap in a low system will cause
slow water flow. It will take longer to fill a basin or fill a bathtub. Otherwise, it could take
up to half an hour for your tub fill. Double-check the compatibility of your
water system before you buy a tap.
INSPECT
TAP HOLLES
The type of tap that you need will depend
on your sanitary ware choice. Your tap will need to match the number of tap holes in your
basin, bath, or bidet.

Basins
Bathroom sinks usually come with one, two
or three predrilled tap holes. Modern basins only have one tap hole that can accommodate a
mono-mixer tap. Two holes are common in
traditional basins, one for hot and one to accommodate cold pillar taps. A three-hole basin houses the hot and cold handles and a
separate water spout.

Bathtubs
Most acrylic baths do not have tap holes.
Your installer will be able to drill the holes for your preferred taps. You can’t drill tap holes
in cast iron, stone resin, or steel baths, so you must use predrilled holes. If
there aren’t, you can choose a separate wall-mounted or floor-standing tap.
Bidets and Bidet Mixer Taps
Bidet taps can be found easily because they
only have one hole. Bidet mixer taps come in a variety of colours to choose
from.
CHOOSE YOUR
STYLE
Your bathroom’s overall look will be
affected by the type of tap you choose. In some cases, exquisite taps can
become focal points. If you are looking to bring new life to your bathroom suite,
the only thing that you should do is to replace the old taps. Bad looking bathrooms are those with mismatched taps. Your faucets should be visually complementary.
Traditional
If you wish to invoke the spirit of the
past, choose taps that have historical features such as cross-head handles,
exquisite craftsmanship, and Edwardian style porcelain inlays. Baths with intricate bath
shower mixers or basins with traditional taps give off a timeless elegance that
is never out of date.
Contemporary
Contemporary taps should have clean lines
and geometric styling to give your home a modern look. Contemporary taps feature
modern features like waterfall spouts or touch-sensitive operations.
MATERIAL
If you are looking for a tap that lasts,
look for elements.
Solid
brass
Solid brass taps resist corrosion well so
make sure to use them whenever possible. Although recycled brass is
the most common type of brass, there are luxury tap makers that offer models
made from pure “virgin”. This metal is
free from contaminants so the water doesn’t have that strange taste associated
with bathroom faucets.
Ceramic
discs
Ceramic discs are more durable than
standard rubber washers and can withstand wear and tear. Ceramic disc taps require
only a 34-degree rotation in order to change from one to the next, which makes
them much easier to use.
FINISHING
TO PERFECTION
Let’s now look at the outside of the tap. Another important
consideration is the tap’s finish. This affects both functionality and bathroom
design.
Chrome
Chrome is the most common finish for
bathroom taps. It accounts for the majority of the taps available. Chrome-plated taps resist
corrosion and are scratch-resistant. They have a shiny, reflective surface that
is easy-to-clean and give off a modern, clean appearance.
Gold
In historical bathrooms, gold taps were a popular choice. They are known for peeling and deterioration because they were not dipped but merely plated.
Modern
taps are now available with an “Antique Gold” look, which is a lighter and more
durable chrome-gold. If you are looking to
replace similar taps, be aware of the difference in colour between the Antique
Gold and older deeper gold taps.
Nickel
Nickel is a new finish that has been
gaining popularity. Arcade and other brassware companies are using it to give
taps a sophisticated look. Nickel is a premium finish that combines strength, longevity
and a beautiful gunmetal appearance.
